Fifth gold medal for Munkebjerg Hotel
The rain of gold over the hotel continues after one of Munkebjerg's receptionist students has won the DM in Skills
“I feel great and am so proud of my own performance. It has been a surreal experience, because I knew well that I had a chance to win, but deep down I didn't dare to fully believe in it.”
It is an "incredibly happy" Sofie Karoline Tams who tells what it is like to be her after she won the DM in Skills for receptionist students on Saturday.
DM i Skills is the Danish championship for vocational education, where the country's most talented EUD students in 47 different subjects compete against each other.
Fifth gold medal in a month
Sofie Karoline Tam's gold medal is the fifth to go to an employee from Munkebjerg Hotel within just one month.
For the Danish championships for professional chefs and waiters, employees from Treetop, Munkebjerg Hotel's gourmet restaurant, won both DM gold for chefs, waiters and apprentice chefs. A historic result that became even more historic when Denmark's best waiter from Treetop was also named the Nordics' best. In other words, Sofie Karoline Tams had a lot to live up to at the DM in Skills, but she feels that she succeeded in turning it into a strength:
"It put a bit more pressure on me, but I actually think it helped make me sharper."
17 tasks in three days
For DM in Skills in Roskilde, Sofie Karoline Tams and the other receptionist students were given tasks within 17 different areas of the receptionist profession over three days. It was not just about the more classic functions such as booking hotel rooms, checking in and out of guests and handling complaints - one of the tasks, for example, consisted of making a presentation on what hotels can do to become more sustainable and a second in creating a program for a couple who wanted an active cycling holiday in Denmark.
For 26-year-old Sofie Karoline Tams, the wide range of tasks is at the same time an expression of the fact that the receptionist profession is "super exciting and with lots of varied challenges:"
"I am so proud that, with my participation and victory in the DM in Skills, I have had the opportunity to show off my profession and tell the outside world that there is so much more to it than just checking guests in and out."
Silver medal for cooking student
Sofie Karoline Tams was not the only one from Munkebjerg Hotel to take part in the DM in Skills – so did Jeppe Hansen, who is a chef apprentice in Munkebjerg Hotel's Panorama Restaurant. With a silver medal, Jeppe Hansen finished second on the podium in the DM in Skills.
On to EuroSkills
There is now the possibility that Sofie Karoline Tams, as winner of the DM in Skills, goes on to the European championships, EuroSkills. It will be decided later by a professional committee whether the receptionist profession will be represented at EuroSkills, which will be held in Herning next year. But right now Sofie Karoline Tams is most filled with joy over the victory in the DM in Skills:
“The win means a lot to me. Not only because I have worked so hard for it, but especially because there is so much recognition of my skills in it. It has already given me greater professional self-confidence, I can feel it.”
